Dig into Hortense’s mythical mussels & fries

Chez Hortense

What is the common denominator between Pascal Obispo, the bourgeois crowd from Bordeaux,  Le Pyla twigs, Marc Lavoine, PPDA, Beigbeder and other VIPs? They are all wild about the mussels-fries served at Hortense, the legendary dish and its secret sauce all the beautiful people genuinely enjoy.

But what is Hortense ?

An inimitable beach guinguette with a white and green awning, erected like a historical monument, since the opening of the restaurant in 1938, passed down from mother to son…

Don’t be fooled by appearances, because even if you get a big hug from Bernadette, the owner, show up barefoot or in espadrilles, on a bike, by boat or in old Méhari, this is the most mundane rendezvous of the Bassin.

We adore… the local VIP square, that means a prime table, on the waterfront with a view overlooking the dunes.

And what’s there to eat other than mussels? A die and go to heaven sole, a grilled bass to share, prepared right in front of you and served at the table ! But what else? Oysters, melon-ham, café liégeois, a pistachio ice cream, cream of chestnut and whipped Chantilly…
