Belleville / Ménilmontant
No, the bobos have not gotten this far. At least not quite... Belleville & Ménilmontant undoubtedly remain the last real popular areas of Paris in the true sense of the term, a melting-pot where die-hard Parisian, second generation North Africans and Chinese cohabit most of the time in perfect harmony. Like having one foot inside a photo by Willy Ronis, the other in Chinatown-ready to paint the town red.

Park of Belleville
A little advice: use the entrance through the top of the park, on the rue des Envierges side.
Here one is higher than at the top of the Butte Montmartre-which implies the view is splendid... and unusual since we often forget this park exists. A lot less « touristy» than the Buttes-Chaumont, it's a green bubble that comprises more than 1000 varieties of trees, on the hillside between Belleville and Ménilmontant.
And as recent parks go (1988), it's a real jewel: terraces, climbing rose trees, bamboo forest, cascades and basins where the local kids dip their feet totally ignoring the « no swimming » signs.
(under the green arch, a shaded staircase. Luckily!)
