Belleville / Ménilmontant
No, the bobos have not gotten this far. At least not quite... Belleville & Ménilmontant undoubtedly remain the last real popular areas of Paris in the true sense of the term, a melting-pot where die-hard Parisian, second generation North Africans and Chinese cohabit most of the time in perfect harmony. Like having one foot inside a photo by Willy Ronis, the other in Chinatown-ready to paint the town red.

Market of Belleville
Even though halal butcher shops may not be your thing, there are a certain number of stalls in this popular outdoor market that really deserve being discovered: fruit and vegetable stands at amazing prices (like 2 EUR the kilo of made in France cherries, if you please), the Indian fabric merchant and his wares-some very kitsch, others superb - at very calm prices, and, mostly, a friendly ambiance, where each one uses the familiar "tu" when he speaks to his neighbor, chews the fat and invariably finishes by buying a little bit of everything n the « everything at 1 EUR » bin !
