Grant it, it's stretching things a little bit since today Galignani is a bookshop known mostly for its art books and press titles... in English! Nonetheless, the History is there...
The Galignani family is one of the first to use the new printing invention to distribute its books to a wider audience. As early as 1520, Simone Galignani published in Venice a Latin grammar then a best-seller, la Geografia by Ptolemaus, published for the first time in 1597. At the end of the 17th century, Giovanni Antonio Galignani leaves a declining Venice for London, then Paris. This is when he opened in 1801, a reading cabinet specialized in English language books.
The leading English authors of the time were edited by the Galignani (Byron, Wordsworth, Thackeray, Scott...) who set up shop at their current address in 1856. Today, while the Italian past may seem a little distant, it's always there one stops to buy the excellent decorating magazine Casa Da Abitare...
