A true landmark of Romanticism in Paris, the Musée de la Vie Romantique reopened on Valentine’s Day after 17 months of renovation. A sign of destiny ? We’ll take it as one and head straight to the Musée de la Vie Romantique, just steps from Pigalle, to soak up the bucolic atmosphere of this historic house museum that once welcomed many of the 19th-century’s greatest intellectuals and artists. Between the masterpieces of Ary Scheffer – the former master of the house – the stunning courtyard, a timeless tea room and the brand-new temporary exhibition dedicated to the skies of Paul Huet, visitors are invited to wander, dream and fully embrace the Romantic spirit.
A Return to Its Roots with a Redesigned Experience

Ready to travel back in time ? The former home and studio of painter Ary Scheffer has undergone a remarkable restoration, returning to its original appearance. What’s new ? The green shutters are gone, replaced with their original brown-beige shade, alongside the building’s historic façade color. Inside, the entire visitor route has been redesigned for a fully immersive Romantic stroll through this elegant 19th-century bourgeois residence. The ground floor is entirely dedicated to Ary Scheffer, his home and his era, showcased through stunning scenography. Upstairs, four major themes of Romanticism unfold: nature, emotion, literature and the fantastical. As you wander through the house, you’ll encounter a bust by Pierre-Jules Cavelier, portraits of princesse Marie d’Orléans and Pauline Viardot, and even the writing quills of George Sand : details that bring the spirit of the 19th century vividly to life.
The Skies of Paul Huet in the Spotlight

Simply cross the charming courtyard to reach the artist’s studio, now home to the inaugural exhibition dedicated to Paul Huet. Face au Ciel pays tribute to the painter, a close friend of Ary Scheffer and a true virtuoso fascinated by the sky. Inspired by his travels to Auvergne, the Pyrénées, Nice and Italy, Paul Huet masterfully captured the emotional power of nature. His canvases explore the sky in all its moods – dramatic storm clouds, vast blue horizons and striking atmospheric effects – offering visitors a breathtaking visual journey.
The highlight ? Nestled beneath a magnificent tree, the tea room and café Rose Bakery is the perfect spot to end your visit. Enjoy carrot cake, rose cake, cappuccino or steaming tea while sitting in front of the historic house, surrounded by the museum’s delightful garden. It’s an idyllic setting to chat for hours with your loved one or write solo in your notebook (#SoRomantic).
Face au Ciel exhibition until August 30, open from 10am to 6pm. Free admission to permanent collections. Temporary exhibition tickets from €10 (reduced rate) and €12 (full price).
