The Most Beautiful Boutique Hotels in Lisbon

Just a short flight from Paris, Lisbon—boasting over 300 days of sunshine a year—is a must-visit destination for a change of scenery filled with strolls, museums, restaurants, shopping, and… beaches. The city offers a diverse hotel scene, as proven by these five properties we’ve personally tested and approved.

Mama Shelter Lisboa

Opened in 2022, Mama Shelter Lisboa has landed right in the heart of the Portuguese capital. Staying true to the brand’s DNA, this boutique hotel blends a lively atmosphere, quirky design, and great value. Its façade, adorned with iconic tiles by Viúva Lamego, is a nod to local heritage.

Inside, the creativity of designer Benjamin El Doghaïli and his team shines through: wave-patterned carpets, lobsters and fish on the ceilings, bold colors, and vibrant textiles create a playful, immersive vibe. The 130 rooms (Small, Medium, or Large) feel like urban cocoons, punctuated with flashes of bright pink. Bath products, branded Mama Skin, are 100% organic.

On the dining side, expect a modern take on a traditional tavern: large wooden tables, classic Portuguese dishes, and signature plates. To top it all off, head to the rooftop for breathtaking views over the Tagus River—signature cocktails and sunset make this one of Lisbon’s hottest spots. Special mention goes to the already cult-favorite Sunday brunch among locals.

Avani Avenida Liberdade Lisbon

It’s hard to imagine a better location than Avani, set on the elegant Avenida da Liberdade—Lisbon’s chic boulevard. Formerly Tivoli Jardim, the hotel underwent a full renovation in 2017, transforming it into a sleek 4-star property. Set slightly back from the avenue, it offers a surprisingly მშვიდ and serene atmosphere right in the city center.

The result: 119 modern rooms dressed in sophisticated tones—purple, black, and white—for a flawless stay. From the moment you step inside, the tone is set: a bright, spacious lobby with floor-to-ceiling windows and cozy lounge areas invites relaxation.

The hotel is also home to one of Lisbon’s trendiest dining spots: Yakuza. Chef Olivier da Costa serves inventive Asian fusion cuisine in a lush, Japanese-inspired setting. For sunset drinks, head to the rooftop bar Seen, located in the neighboring Tivoli hotel. This open-air bar-restaurant offers breathtaking views over São Jorge Castle and, in the distance, the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel also features a brand-new fitness center, Avani Fit, open 24/7.

Verride Palácio Santa Catarina

Perched on the Santa Catarina hill, this 18th-century palace turned boutique hotel blends historic grandeur with contemporary elegance. Restored by architect Teresa Nunes da Ponte, Verride Palácio Santa Catarina preserves its original volumes, azulejos, and stucco details while incorporating sleek modern lines.

Behind its walls, 19 rooms and suites offer a unique atmosphere—a refined dialogue between royal heritage and minimalist design, enhanced by Lisbon’s golden light. The highlight? The Royal Suite, with its sculpted ceilings and spectacular proportions—a true fairytale setting.

There’s no spa or gym here—the building itself is the experience. The magic truly happens on the rooftop, where a suspended pool overlooks the city and offers sweeping views of the Tagus River, Lisbon’s rooftops, and the Cristo Rei statue. A rare and intimate address just 10 minutes from the vibrant Bairro Alto—perfect for a weekend escape.

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

Located opposite Eduardo VII Park, this five-star hotel—awarded two Michelin Keys—has been a Lisbon hotspot since the late 1950s. It recently underwent a major renovation in 2021 led by designers Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec of Oitoemponto, who preserved its original charm.

The result is a joyful blend of Art Deco, Louis XVI furniture, and 1920s lighting, enhanced by a remarkable contemporary art collection. Across its 282 rooms and suites, guests enjoy elegant luxury paired with modern technology.

Dining is another highlight: chef Rodolfo Lavrador now leads Cura, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant. Guests also love Varanda for Portuguese cuisine and the Ritz Bar for cocktails. The spa is exceptional, offering treatments ranging from acupuncture to lymphatic drainage and Ayurvedic rituals, alongside both indoor and heated outdoor pools. There’s even a 400-meter rooftop running track.

Das Amoreiras

Just steps from the Águas Livres Aqueduct, on the peaceful Jardim das Amoreiras square, this discreet boutique hotel masters understated elegance. With only 19 rooms and suites, it offers an intimate, home-away-from-home feel in a refined setting.

Designed by architect Pedro Oliveira, Das Amoreiras plays on harmonious contrasts: natural materials, rattan, and camel leather meet Estremoz marble and contemporary lines, creating a warm yet sophisticated atmosphere. The rooms invite you to slow down and embrace Lisbon’s gentle rhythm.

In the morning, head to the inner courtyard—a lush haven where à la carte breakfast is served using fresh, local ingredients. Simple, delicate, and perfectly in tune with the spirit of the place. No spa or gym here—just a focus on tranquility and personalized hospitality. A rare gem for those seeking an authentic Lisbon experience away from the crowds.
